What is an Investment Counsellor?

Investment counsellors provide up-scale professional money management to affluent Canadian investors. An investment counsel is a professional whose only business is to manage portfolios and advise clients.

Our clients include wealthy individuals, companies, trusts and estates, foundations, endowment funds, and retirement and mutual funds. While the concept may seem a fresh one to a generation of investors weaned on mutual funds, investment counsel has existed in North America since the early part of the 20th century. Certain principles of practice were well established and have become formalized into a statement of ethical conduct by which all members must abide.

As an investor, you are interested in safety and in professional management of your assets in keeping with your specific needs and objectives. Investment counsellors manage investments for clients only on this basis. They charge fees for their services as a percentage of the asset value of your account. In this way, your interest and theirs are aligned. Investment counsellors are not compensated by transaction commissions, and the counsellor's remuneration only increases as your account grows in value. Tax-deductible fees charged to manage your money start melting with investment counsellors, and fall steadily as the portfolio grows.
